Mobility Scooters: Frequently Asked Questions
Posted by Susan T. on Aug 17th 2020
A mobility scooter is a mobility aid. It is equivalent to a wheelchair but upgraded to function like a motor-scooter. Mobility scooters are nothing short of a blessing for people with mobility impairments.
They can help create new opportunities for people with reduced mobility and improve their quality of life. If a loved one has mobility problems, consider gifting them a mobility scooter. A mobility scooter will give you or your loved one an increased sense of independence as they will be able to move around with as well as without their caregiver.
If you have made up your mind to buy an electric mobility scooter but still have some questions, you have come to the right place. To help you make an informed decision, we attempt to answer some FAQs about mobility scooters.
Which Parts on a Mobility Scooter Need Maintenance and Repairs?
Every mechanical part wears down over time. That said, some parts are more prone to wearing than others. The four common mobility scooter parts that must be replaced at recommended intervals are – tires, batteries, controller, and armrests.
Check your owner’s manual to determine whether your mobility scooter has some special parts that need replacement continually. Though you can do minor repairs yourself, never try to service parts or wires that make up the power module.
Can a Person Travel With Me On My Mobility Scooter?
Most mobility scooters are designed to bear the weight of one individual (the user). We recommend against carrying a person with you on your mobility scooter, unless it has a factory-installed second seat. If you try to do so, your mobility scooter can topple, and both you and the person may get injured.
Are there Mobility Scooters Designed for More than One Person?
Some mobility scooters are designed specifically for more than one person. They feature dual-seats and a higher weight capacity to accommodate more than one rider.
Is There Any Difference Between 3-wheel and 4-wheel Scooters (apart from the number of wheels)?
4-wheel scooters usually have a wider wheelbase than their 3-wheel counterparts. 3-wheel scooters are more compact, lightweight, and have a shorter turning radius than 4-wheel scooters.
Can a Mobility Scooter Be Legally Driven On the Road?
Mobility scooters are not designed to be used on roads. Models fit for outdoor use can be driven on sidewalks, driveways, and parking lots. Many individuals use their mobility scooter to ride around their neighborhood, go to the store, walk their dog, or when travelling.
Whether you can use your mobility scooter on the road will depend on the model and state laws. You may have to get your mobility scooter registered and may need safety equipment such as mirrors, helmet, and horns for road use.
Can I take my scooter on an airplane?
All mobility scooters sold at Mobility Masters have batteries that are "maintenance free" and are allowed on airlines. Mobility Masters advises that regardless of your maintenance free battery type ("gel cell", "sealed lead acid" or “lithium-ion”) that you check with the airline directly to get their approval. You may also need to contact the scooter manufacturer for a MSDS sheet on your batteries, you should check with your airlines if TSA is requiring this documentation.
What Happens if My Scooter Breaks Down?
We are here to support you throughout the life of your equipment, and this includes helping you with any problems that may arise after you receive your scooter. Please contact us directly at 1-800-936-7006 and we will attempt to troubleshoot it over the phone. Many times, it is the flip of a switch or reconnecting a wire to help you get on your way again. If we are not successful with that, or it indicates a bigger problem, we will arrange for a service technician to come to your home (only available on Pride and Golden Technologies scooters). If you have a scooter by a different manufacturer, we will contact the manufacturer to obtain warranty parts and have them shipped to your home.
