Equipment Focus: Scooter and Wheelchair Tires
Posted by Susan T. on Dec 15th 2020
Tires are an integral part of your mobility aid. They are designed to maintain grip over a variety of terrains and indoor surfaces. Functional tires will support your mobility aid's weight and help make your experience a pleasurable one.
Whether you use a wheelchair or mobility scooter to move around, maintain your tires. If your tires are excessively worn or nearing the end of their service life, replace them in a timely manner.
Tires come with different types of tread patterns. When choosing a tread pattern, consider how you intend to use a mobility aid. For example, if you plan to use your mobility aid primarily in rough outdoor environments, look for tires with deeper tread patterns designed to maximize grip on different surfaces.
When choosing a replacement, refer to your user manual. Look for important information regarding tire radius, width, and other specifications. If you want to make sure that you’re picking the right replacement equipment, call us at (800) 936-7006.
Mobility Aid Tire Types
Pneumatic Tires
Pneumatic tires are also known as air-filled tires. They have an inner tube and must stay inflated before use. Pneumatic tires are usually very light and found on larger wheels on heavy-duty scooters or self-propelled wheelchairs.
As pneumatic tires are air-filled, they provide a dampening effect. They usually have a deeper tread for better grip. Pneumatic tires may lose air, are susceptible to punctures, and need regular maintenance.
Both underinflating and overinflating pneumatic tires is strictly advised against. If your mobility aid has pneumatic tires, check tire pressure regularly. Maintain equal pressure in all tires.
Check the inner tubes of your pneumatic tires regularly for wear, tear, and punctures. Move swiftly to replace worn and punctured tubes.
Solid Tires
Solid tires are made from a solid block of rubber (hence the name). Some tires use different types of plastic. Though they do not require inflation, solid tires must be regularly checked for wear, tear, and common problems such as cracks, loss of tread, and rubber degradation.
As they do not need air, solid tires are puncture-proof. They need less maintenance than pneumatic tires. However, solid tires are less flexible than pneumatic tires and cannot adapt to as many driving terrains.
