Obtaining Medical Equipment with Insurance or Medicare Reimbursement

Mobility Masters is a full-service rehabilitation equipment provider. We employ clinicians (physical and occupational therapists) and equipment specialists (assistive technology suppliers and assistive technology practitioners) who work with patients and their physicians to determine the equipment that will best serve the patient’s medical needs.

Selecting the proper equipment is a process that begins with the physician’s prescription. Once we have the prescription, an appointment with one of our equipment specialists will be scheduled. During this appointment, the specialist will obtain a medical history and conduct an assessment of the patient’s current physical condition to determine which equipment will be appropriate. The evaluation can take from one to two hours depending upon the complexity of the patient’s needs.

When the written evaluation is completed, it will be sent to the attending physician for signature. If required by the insurance company, it may be necessary for the physician to complete a letter of medical necessity to substantiate the need for the medical equipment being requested. Medicare claims may require copies of the attending physician’s chart notes to support medical need.

In some cases, insurance companies require that prior authorization be obtained. From the time the physician’s order is received to date of equipment delivery can vary because of the documentation required by Medicare and insurance companies.

The staff at Mobility Masters recognizes that patients are anxious to obtain their equipment in the shortest time possible. Often, delays occur because of documentation delays or because of insurance company procedures. Because certain physical conditions can often require complex, custom-made, medical equipment, the time frame to obtain this equipment is necessarily longer than ordering a standard wheel chair. Our staff does everything possible to make sure that equipment delivery is prompt and timely.
